What are acquired rights?

Acquired rights allow a person whose real estate brokers licence has been revoked for less than 12 months to return to practice without having to complete a basic training program again, if applicable, and pass an OACIQ certification examination.1

Your licence was revoked on April 30, 2025?

You must choose between maintaining your acquired rights or returning to practice.

IMPORTANT:

If no request is made within the specified period to maintain the acquired rights, they will be permanently lost.

The person will then have to retake the entire basic training program and pass the OACIQ exam to obtain a new real estate brokerage licence.

OPTION 1: Maintaining acquired rights

This option is for individuals who do not wish to return to practice immediately but wish to maintain their acquired rights for another year.

Before April 30, 2026, they must:

  • Pay the fee of $445.15, taxes included, via the Online Checkout.
  • No in-person payments can be made at our head office.

How to maintain the acquired rights

  • Access the Online Checkout to pay the applicable fees
  • Within a few days after the payment, receipts will be available in the “Receipts and invoices” section in the Brokers' Area
  • Acquired rights are maintained from May 1, 2026, to April 30, 2027

During this period:

  • The licence remains revoked with acquired rights
  • All real estate brokerage activities are prohibited

OPTION 2: Returning to practice

This option is for individuals who wish to resume practising real estate brokerage.

Before April 23, 2026, they must:

  • Submit the licence application and pay the applicable fees
    • Provide the required documents, namely a recent photo taken within less than 6 months and any mandatory declarations, if any

REGULATORY REMINDER:

To maintain acquired rights or return to practice, the application must comply with regulatory requirements. Any amounts owed to the OACIQ must be paid, and any training imposed or required following an undertaking must have been completed.

REMEMBER:

The annual licence renewal must then be completed no later than April 30 of the current year.
