Mandatory basic training:
Important information for candidates wishing to become real estate or mortgage brokers

In an effort to enhance brokers’ skills and address the concerns of real estate professionals, any candidate wishing to take the OACIQ certification exam must have previously taken and passed a basic training program recognized by the OACIQ.

This decision was taken following the Real Estate summit held in February 2012, where the issue was raised by real estate and mortgage brokerage professionals and practitioners. For this purpose, a regulatory change was announced on November 28, 2012 by the Québec Minister of Finance.

See below the situation matching yours.

  1. I have not yet taken an OACIQ certification examination in the desired field of practice (residential, commercial, mortgage).
  2. I wrote an OACIQ certification exam, but I failed one or many competencies.
  3. I am already an OACIQ licence holder and wish to add a field of practice (residential, commercial, mortgage).
  4. I am a former licence holder and wish to return to the profession.

1. First certification examination in the desired field of practice

To be eligible for the OACIQ certification examination, candidates must first successfully complete a basic training program accredited by the OACIQ for the licence requested.

2. Certification exam underway

Candidates, who have taken a certification exam in a field of practice (residential, commercial, or mortgage), have three supplemental exams in the same field of practice within a 12-month time period as of the date they took the first exam to successfully complete it.

If they still have not passed the exam after this time frame, they will have to wait 12 months before retaking it. At that time, they must have taken and passed a mandatory basic training of a program accredited by the OACIQ before being eligible for an OACIQ certification exam.

3. Adding a field of practice

The candidate who already has a licence and wishes to add a field to his professional practice must successfully complete a basic training program accredited by the OACIQ for the new requested licence before taking a certification examination for that.

The educational institution may, at its discretion, determine whether the recognition of prior learning may apply to certain courses.

To learn about the training programs recognized by the OACIQ, read the article Educational institutions and training programs recognized by the OACIQ.

4. Return to practice

A holder whose licence is no longer valid may ask for another licence of the same category to be issued, within 12 months following its expiration. If the request is made after this deadline, he must successfully complete a mandatory basic training program accredited by the OACIQ before being eligible for an OACIQ certification exam.
